Recently, I've had my PlayStation 3 shutdown and flash a yellow light. I looked it up online and it was called the 'yellow light of death', also known as YLOD. This is usually caused by the PS3 being turned on and off so many times. When you do that, the PS3 gets hot and cold. The constant change of temperatures makes the motherboard in the PS3 to somewhat melt and separate the CPU and GPU from the board. When that happens, it just stops working. I noticed a little bit before it got the YLOD, the fan turned on and off quite often and it was really loud. (So to give a little advice, you should turn off your PS3 when you hear that and let it cool down for a few hours).
I looked up on Google if I could fix it myself. The first thing I found was that I could send the PS3 into Sony and have them look at it. They really don't look at it. They just send you a slightly used one back. The cost of doing this is about $150 plus tax and whatnot. I obviously don't have that kind of money laying around so I looked for a different option. I found a guy that said he knew how to fix them without sending the PS3 in. I contacted him and he told me how to do it. I then fixed my PS3 and it works just fine.
All you need to fix a PS3 is: A heat gun, some thermal compound, a phillips screwdriver, a hex head screwdriver, and an old credit card of gift card (to apply the compound smoothly).
To do this, you need to take apart your PS3 until you get to just the motherboard. While you do this, it would be a good idea to clean any dust off of your parts. Then you would take your heat gun and heat up the CPU and GPU and then let them cool. That's to make them reconnect to the board. Then you would apply the compound on the CPU and GPU as smooth as possible. Then put everything back together and it should work as good as new. (I put these instructions in very simplest form. There are a lot of little things you must do in between these steps.)
I would be glad to do all this for anyone who needs this to be fixed, but for a price. I will charge $50 for each PS3 I would fix. You can Email me at dylan.thompson69@gmail.com if you would want me to do this for you.
